The Killari earthquake was one of the deadliest earthquakes Maharashtra has seen to date. The earthquake struck at about 3:56 am on September 30, 1993. In the intraplate earthquake, which measured 6.7 on the moment magnitude scale, about 52 villages were destroyed, over 30,000 were injured, and approximately 10,000 were killed. The earthquake left a huge hollow at Killari, which was also the epicentre and remains in place to date. The earthquake primarily affected the districts of Latur and Osmanabad, including the Ausa block of Latur and Omerga of Osmanabad. Upon hearing the news, MANAVLOK reacted immediately to the tragedy by sending relief teams & volunteers and assisting with the treatment of the injured over the next several weeks. The first convoy of some vehicles loaded with relief material such as tents, blankets, food and clothing, medical supplies, and temporary shelters was given by MANAVLOK. Basic necessities such as food, clean drinking water, clothing, blankets, and tents for the survivors were organized and dispatched to the needy ones by MANAVLOK. From September 1993 to date, MANAVLOK has been operating in nearly 35 villages in this area, providing them with social services in terms of agricultural support, agricultural implement distribution, health support, drinking water & sanitation, education support, conducting awareness programs, & other related social causes.
